So you wanna learn web development but don’t want to have to go to school or pay big bucks, right? Here are some of our favorite free online web development courses where you can acquire the skills you want at no extra cost. Some even give you recognized certificates.
Unlike many professions that require months or even years of training, with free online web development courses you can easily get started today if you really want to!
1. freeCodeCamp (Visit)
This is the most comprehensive course and our favorite one on this list of free online web development courses. Finishing their courses is equal to doing 1.5 years of school work. You however don’t even need to finish half of the courses before being considerably skilled as a web developer. Some say its best if you actually dont aim to finish the course.
If you do manage to go halfway and retain the knowledge gathered along the way then just know that you can now call your self a web developer and have the skills to boot.
2. Coursera (Visit)
Has a variety of free online web development courses and other topics too. This site offers a plethora of online courses from a variety of universities around the world for free. Each course varies slightly in format and timeline, but numerous free online courses are available for programming, development, and computer science to give you the jump start you need. These guys have courses from a number of Ivy league schools so you are in for a world of learning my friend, don’t get lost in time.
3. Mozilla Developer Network (Visit)
Looking for a free online web development courses made by a famous company? Well here’s a simple course made by yours truly, Mozilla. Mozilla, the team behind the popular Firefox web browser, have created an incredible resource for developers of all skill levels and expertise through the Mozilla Developer Network. These resources, articles, and tutorials are perfect for those who learn best using the tried-and-true method of reading words and seeing examples right there on the page. The range of topics is wide, from basic web introductions and front-end languages to common vocabulary and optimization & performance. It is however easy to get lost on the MDN site.
4. Alison (Visit)
A wonderful bundle of courses from beginner to advanced on their beautiful website. They also have a variety of courses in different fields and subjects. Earn your diploma in web design with her easy to understand course that is in nine parts starting with the basics up to creating a fully formed and usable website. In the course she covers HTML, Adobe Dreamweaver, and CSS. Plus you learn about publishing, designing and building with her step-by-step course so that you may create basic web pages. It is a nice starting point for new designers. This list of free online web development courses wouldn’t be complete without her on it.
5. Code School (Visit)
Their motto is learn by doing, which isn’t a bad idea. This is for the beginner that doesn’t really have a passion for web design. This is for people that want to write their own websites without having to rely on content management systems(CMSs) and yet are not really all that interested in the drudgery of learning. That is why they have set up games and themes to help you learn without putting too much effort in. Sadly, there are only eight introductory course, but they are helpful for beginners with no experience.
6. Launch School (Visit)
This program isn’t for everyone. That’s why you can take their free prep courses and then make a decision. No matter your experience, you should start with the free prep courses, and get a feel for the format. If you are able to finish the prep courses and enjoy that experience, you may consider registering for paid courses. If you can’t finish the prep courses or didn’t enjoy the experience, then you probably shouldn’t take the Launch School program. The formats are not what you are used to and they get into the advanced topics quit deeply.
7. W3Schools (Visit)
W3Schools does away with all the fancy videos and instead has a straightforward set of tutorials. The tutorials cover all the popular web development languages, as well as advanced languages. Instead of teaching the theory behind web development, it teaches more of the syntax. Its the perfect addition and among the most compact of the free online web development courses on this list. Even the most seemingly insignificant tutorials areas are covered by these guys so if you need help with this or that feature, you should definitley stop by their site.
8. The Odin Project (Visit)
Note: Has nothing to do with Thor or Asgard.
The Odin Project is somewhere in between Udacity and Codecademy. It uses a “back-to-front” approach when teaching web development. This means they teach you ruby and ruby on rails first as a framework for your site before teaching you front-end languages such as HTML, CSS, and jQuery. Much like freecodecamp and Udacity, it will whoop you into a badass if you do it right, hence earning a spot on the list of the best free online web development courses.
9. Udacity (Visit)
Now this has a lot of amazing free courses and you can pay to get a certificate/degree upon successful completion of some courses. It doesn’t just have courses on web development, it covers a wide variety of topic in tech including mobile development, web design and a number of advanced topics which is why it is on this list. They also have paid nano-degrees.
On this list you will find every skill and piece of information you as a web developer would need to and might want to learn or know.
